Skin Elixir started as natural skincare. Over time, I realised the ritual of applying skincare mindfully was doing more than nourishing my skin—it was regulating my nervous system. That insight led to an evolution: Skin Elixir is now self-regulation skincare, and ROOTED cards extend that regulation beyond the bathroom.
This FAQ covers everything you need to know about this journey and the products that support it.

What is Skin Elixir?
Skin Elixir is a natural skincare brand based in Nottingham, UK. I create award-winning, handmade skincare products using 100% natural, organic, vegan ingredients. My philosophy is simple: skincare as self-regulation. When you slow down to care for your skin mindfully, you're not just nourishing your skin—you're regulating your nervous system.
What does "self-regulation skincare" mean?
Self-regulation is your ability to manage your internal state—your emotions, stress, and nervous system responses. When you apply your skincare mindfully (breathing in the scent, feeling the texture, massaging with intention), you activate your parasympathetic nervous system and create a moment of calm. My products are designed to support both your skin health and your nervous system.
Where are your products made?
All Skin Elixir products are handmade by me in small batches in Nottingham. Every product is personally crafted, checked, and packaged by me.
Are your products really 100% natural?
Yes! Every ingredient in my products is natural, plant-based, and organic where possible. I never use synthetic fragrances, parabens, sulfates, silicones, or any harsh chemicals. What you see on the ingredient list is exactly what's in the bottle—nothing hidden. All my products are safety tested and lab approved.
Are your products vegan and cruelty-free?
Absolutely. All Skin Elixir products are 100% vegan (no animal-derived ingredients) and cruelty-free (never tested on animals).

What is bakuchiol?
Bakuchiol is a plant-based alternative to retinol. It delivers the same anti-ageing benefits (reduces fine lines, evens skin tone, boosts collagen) without the irritation, sensitivity, or sun sensitivity that retinol causes. It's gentle enough for sensitive skin and safe to use during the day.
What is black seed oil?
Black seed oil (Nigella Sativa) is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory oil. It protects skin from environmental damage, soothes irritation, supports barrier function, and has been used for centuries in traditional medicine. I include it in many of my formulations for its skin-healing properties.
Are your products waterless?
All of my skincare products are waterless (anhydrous), which means they contain no water. This makes them more concentrated, longer-lasting, and better for the environment. Waterless formulas deliver more active ingredients to your skin without the need for preservatives.
Do your products contain preservatives?
My waterless products (oils, balms) don't need preservatives because bacteria can't grow without water. My water-based products (moisturisers, creams) use natural preservatives vitamin E and rosemary extract to keep them fresh and safe.
How long do your products last?
My products have a shelf life of 12-18 months unopened. Once opened, I recommend using them within 6-12 months for optimal freshness. Because I make everything in small batches, your products are always fresh when they arrive.
Can I use your products if I have sensitive skin?
Yes! My products are formulated for sensitive skin. I use gentle, natural ingredients and avoid common irritants like synthetic fragrances, essential oils (in some products), and harsh chemicals. Many of my customers with rosacea, eczema, and reactive skin use my products successfully. If you're unsure, request a free sample first.
🌸 Using Your Products
How do I use face oils?
Apply 2-4 drops to clean, damp skin. Warm the oil between your palms, take three deep breaths (inhale the scent), then gently press and massage into your face and neck. You can use oils alone or layer them under/over moisturiser. Use Super Natural Day Oil in the morning, Magnificent Night Oil in the evening.
Can I use oils if I have oily skin?
Yes! Natural face oils actually help balance oil production. When you strip your skin with harsh cleansers, it overproduces oil to compensate. Natural oils signal to your skin that it has enough moisture, which reduces excess oil over time. Choose lightweight oils like jojoba (which mimics your skin's natural sebum).
What's the difference between your day oil and night oil?
Super Natural Day Oil contains 2% bakuchiol and black seed oil for daytime anti-ageing and protection. Magnificent Night Oil contains pomegranate, moringa, calendula, and black seed oil for overnight repair and nourishment. The day oil is lighter and absorbs quickly; the night oil is richer for deep overnight hydration.
Can I use your moisturiser as a cleanser?
Yes! My Organic Frankincense & May Chang Moisturiser doubles as a gentle cleanser. Massage it onto dry skin to dissolve makeup and impurities, then remove with a warm, damp cotton cloth (I include a free cloth with your order). It cleanses without stripping your skin.
How do I layer products?
Morning routine: Cleanse → Moisturiser → Face oil (or oil first, then moisturiser) → SPF
Evening routine: Cleanse → Face oil or night cream → (optional) seal with more oil
There's no wrong way—experiment and see what your skin loves!
Do I need to use SPF with bakuchiol?
Unlike retinol, bakuchiol doesn't cause sun sensitivity, so it's safe to use during the day. However, I always recommend using SPF during the day to protect your skin from UV damage, regardless of what products you're using.

What are ROOTED cards?
ROOTED is a portable toolkit of 10 evidence-based self-regulation practices designed to help you move from overwhelm to calm in real time. They're not affirmations—they're instructions. Each card gives you a specific practice to regulate your nervous system when you're stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed.
How are ROOTED cards different from affirmations?
Affirmations tell you what to think ("I am calm"). ROOTED cards tell you what to DO ("Take three deep breaths, feeling your belly rise and fall"). They're based on nervous system science, not positive thinking. They give you actionable steps to shift your state in real time.
When do I use ROOTED cards?
Anytime you need to regulate your nervous system: during stress, overwhelm, anxiety, hot flashes, panic, burnout, or when you just need a moment of calm. Keep them in your bag, on your desk, or by your bed. Use them alongside your skincare ritual or throughout your day.
Do I need to use ROOTED cards with Skin Elixir products?
No! ROOTED cards work on their own as a standalone self-regulation toolkit. However, they pair beautifully with your skincare ritual because both support nervous system regulation. Use your skincare as your morning and evening anchor, and ROOTED cards as your portable toolkit throughout the day.
Are ROOTED cards suitable for children?
Yes! The practices are simple, evidence-based, and suitable for all ages. Many teachers use ROOTED cards in classrooms to help students regulate. I also offer a Teacher's Toolkit with sample moisturisers to share.

Do you offer free delivery?
Yes! I offer free UK delivery on all orders. International shipping is available at checkout.
How long does delivery take?
UK orders are dispatched within 1-3 business days and typically arrive within 3-5 business days via Royal Mail. International delivery times vary by location.
Can I track my order?
Yes! You'll receive a tracking number via email once your order is dispatched.
Do you offer samples?
Yes! I offer free samples of my Organic Frankincense & May Chang Moisturiser (just pay £2 postage, refunded with full-size purchase). Email shona@skinelixir.co.uk to request yours. Every order also includes a surprise morning affirmation card.
Can I return products?
Yes. If you're not happy with your purchase, contact me within 30 days for a refund or exchange. Products must be unused and in original packaging. I want you to love your skincare!
Do you offer gift wrapping?
My products come beautifully packaged and ready to gift. If you'd like a personal message included, leave a note at checkout and I'll handwrite it for you.
💚 Sustainability & Ethics
Is your packaging recyclable?
Yes! I use glass bottles and jars (100% recyclable), and recyclable cardboard boxes. I avoid plastic wherever possible and use minimal packaging.
Are your products sustainable?
Yes. I'm committed to sustainability through small-batch production (zero waste from overproduction), natural and organic ingredients (biodegradable, no microplastics), recyclable packaging, UK-based production (lower carbon footprint), and waterless formulations (conserves water). Do you test on animals?
Never. I'm cruelty-free and vegan. No animal testing, ever.
